Lightning and Lightning Bugs

As I drove along the unlit road, lightning flashed in the sky. The rhythm of it was never the same twice. It controlled the sky, dictating whether it was night or day.

Through the trees lining the road, I saw small yellow flashes. Fireflies danced in the leaves, unperturbed by the lightning and rain. They beat their own rhythm, separate from the bolts in the sky. Their lights blazed boldly through the gloom, flying over my car and lining the street. As the storm raged on and moved away, the lightning bugs remained where they were, as if nothing unique had happened at all.
