Shirou Kamui

Kamui Shirou is a sixteen year old high school sophomore. He was
born in Tokyo, but left with his mother Tooru at age ten, shortly
after the somewhat excessively gruesome death of Saya Monou, the
mother of his friends Fuuma and Kotori. Six years later he comes
back, having at some point developed godlike powers (that's got to
come in handy) and severe psychological problems. It turns out
that his mother has died in a mysterious fire (I sense a device!),
and with her last words has sent him back to Tokyo to meet his
destiny. Kamui, in case you haven't figured it out yet, has two
destinies: to become a Dragon of Heaven and save humanity or
become a Dragon of Earth and destroy humanity. This is a fairly
major plot point, which you can tell because of his name (Kamui
means both "one who represents the majesty of God" and "one who
hunts the majesty of God"), and because everyone in a ten mile
radius of him has prophetic visions about his destiny. It's
amazing that any of his classmates can concentrate in school.
He chose to save humanity, or more specifically, his
childhood friends Fuuma and Kotori. They say that no good deed
goes unpunished. As soon as he chose a side, Fuuma was allotted to
be his opposite, but hey, they say everyone has an evil twin.
Kamui’s just happens to be his best friend. The lesson here is
not to try to save humanity.
The current Kamui is traumatized and somewhat lacking in
spine. But we hope he’ll get it together so humanity won’t kick
off.
